Default Critique My Photos Anywhere On the Forum...

I'm not sure how the rest of you feel but I really wish we would go back to the way it was before that last change around the critique option. Even though I have checked the Critique My Photos Anywhere option as I always think of myself as being open to critique at any time sometimes I just want to share.

Also, sometimes I just want to pat someone on the back for a decent image. Sure the white balance is off by a bit or the focus isn't spot on but I really hate feeling like I have to add a critique to EVERY image posted simply because they checked the box saying they're open to critique.

So, I'm whining... I want to go back to a forum where critiques are done in the critique thread and the other parts of the forum are for people to enjoy sharing photos.

Am I alone in this, in which case I will shut up about it, or do others feel the same way?

I dunno, to me it means if you notice something you would like to comment on then feel free to do so. You don't have to hold back because it is not in the critique section. Also if you do want to critique, you do not have to give a complete critique. But... if all you want to say is I love that red colour then that is all that is necessary as well.

I hear you. Sometimes I post a pic just to share. Having said that I sorta think most of what I do could use a critique if not to improve my photography then at least to make me think. Its nice to find out sometimes that peoples critiques fall in line with what I was thinking. For my part I dont critique a whole lot anyway.

Is it a breach of etiquette to post the same photo in more than one sub forum? I wouldn't mind all my photos to be critiqued; but sometimes I'm not sure of where to put them. If it's nature I like to put them in that category but I'm also open to them being critiqued. So I guess my opinion on the OP hinges upon the answer.

I'm not sure I get it Iggy - from my understanding, there's zero obligation to critique even if the Critique my photos anywhere in the forum phrase shows.

Personally, IF that phrase shows I may (but not always) critique the image anywhere, but my critique will not be in depth.

However - IF the image is posted in the critique forum itself, then a member is actively asking for an in depth critique and I almost always offer one.

    at least that's my take.....

Sounds like my whining is for naught.... no worries.... I'll blame it on February. The Winter Blah's have me in their tight grasp.

I will elaborate on my thinking, Marko, so you know where I'm coming from but this is not necessarily reality... just my warped sense of it

I wonder if when Michael posted this image: http://www.photography.ca/Forums/f22...ine-17238.html he expected critique or not? I know he says "Critique my photos anywhere in the forum" so I am not picking on anyone for critiquing when it was essentially asked for but I wonder if we sometimes forget that we've made that blanket statement. When I saw the shot, I liked his results and thought it was a nice image and that's all I was planning to say. After seeing a couple of other comments though, I suddenly felt pressure to add my critique as well. I know there is no requirement for me to do so and as you see, in the end, I didn't.

I guess I just felt that there may be ambiguity as sometimes it depends on mood of the poster as to what they want from sharing. But, since everyone seems to be in agreement, just ignore me and I'll go back to doing what I've been doing.

I can see where you are coming from Iggy. I posted a photo a couple of weeks ago, absolutely forgetting I clicked the "you can critique" and got a lot back and was like..what? Then I realized. I was fine with it and took it all in but for a moment there it took me off.

I think it's nice to have the option though. Many times I miss things or don't see them and it helps to have that extra set of eyes.

That is how I think about it too. I know I have only been back a week, but I have seen others critique photos not in the critique section on a number of occasions.

Now I am feeling even more guilty. As one of those that Iggy is referring to, I will admit to some ambiguity as to when to comment and when not to. I have seen it done both ways on this forum. My general understanding was the same as JAS Photo.

As I am new here, and being one who needs more critique than most, the last thing I want to do is make inappropriate comments or observations.

My sincere apologies to any I may have offended.
I welcome all critique and comments on any of my photos

Don't feel guilty at all. You did absolutely nothing wrong. Michael may have been quite happy to receive some feedback and you gave fine feedback. I have just been finding it all a bit confusing lately but it's probably more me than anything else. The cold, grey days of winter start to get to me after a while.
