Berry bushes are so varied and interesting I can see what drew you to this. Here's how I'd tackle it. If I intended to choose a cluster of berries in the interior of the plant, I'd make sure the out of focus branches in front of it are well to the side. If they're too near the in focus subject they distract. Conversely if I wanted to give a more overall impression of the shapes of the leaves I'd make sure the one closest to me was in focus, this way the eye has a smoother path to follow through the photo. It's easier for the brain to fill in OOF detail farther away from the actual subject than it is to have OOF elements seemingly 'scattered' throughout the picture.
Thanks and I agree, they sure didn't turn out like I wanted. I think sometimes I just get into too big a hurry.
