A painter takes their vision and makes it a reality. A photographer takes reality and makes it their vision.
The first shot works well for me because of the angle and the clouds.
The first shot works very well, the second just too crowded for the tree to have your eyes drawn to it.

I agree about the second one...I scouted it for a bit trying to figure out how to get it as I thought there was something there, Short of hurling myself off the cliff this was the best I could do....
