Ha ha...how to use it right!Ha ha..I've only used it three-four times and never had the time to get practicing with it. Next trip out..remote and wireless something so I can have it off camera.
Then the questions will be coming!!!!

Cool shots MA, fantastic colour. I was out on the bike yesterday and saw some similar fungi and thought it would make a good shot.
What's the minimum focal length on that lens? I just bought myself a set of Kenko extension tubes as a belated Christmas present.
What are you using to slave the flashes?

It says the macro is 0.38m on it ... and that's about right ... I have be about 200mm (from the front element) from the subject to get auto focus ... add the length of the lens back to the sensor and that would be about right.
Love to know how those extention tubes go!
Nothing extra to slave the flash ... but the other flash. With the 580 you set the flash in the hotshoe to 'master' and the off camera flash to 'slave.' Then any flash power adjustment made on the master affects the slave as well.
Thats right the 580 can master/slave if you have 2. I was thinking about off camera flash with one 580 and wondering if you got a device for this. I have seen them on ebay cheap. I can't afford(justify) two 580EX flashes.
FYI these are the extesion tubes Kenko Teleplus Extension Tube DG Set for Canon EF/EF-S on eBay. I was going to get them local, but out of stock, plus these were half the price. This whole set is about half the price of a single Canon genuine tube, and I have read this set is pretty good. AF is retained and lens info is passed back to the body.
I'm hoping the 70-200 f/2.8 L will be good for macro. It is OK at the moment, but the minimum focal distance is the limiting factor.

I've read lots of the manual..but it's like a different language for me. I need a dummie book for it. :(
