Thanks, Marko. Really didn't do much to them at all. Some local adjustments for tone and contrast. They were shot in the Vivid mode and underexposed a bit which probably accounts for the look you describe. I think I should have applied an unsharpe mask to the center of the second one. It looks a little soft to me now.
REALLY? wow. Shot 1 in particular looks more like 'mixed media' or graphic than a straight photograph.

Yeah, off and on. It was overcast with rain yesterday and it helps the colors to pop in those conditions. I just forgot to set the picture control back to standard today under mostly sunny skies, but all is well. Even when you use a setting that you realize later that you shouldn't have used Capture NX2 allows you to adjust the camera settings in post just like you had set the camera the way you wanted it before hand.
This was done in the default Vivid picture control. I have version of the default where I boosted the saturation a little more.
