The repetition was caused by the fact I was shooting directly at the sun so the reflections are caused by the glass elements within the 400mm lens. The sheer brightness kept the image soft. If I used a higher aperture it eliminated the reflections and just looked like a white ball with a crescent cut out of it. I could have made that in photoshop.
Matt ... I screwed on an ND4, an ND8, and a CP ... apart from that it's out of camera.
