Thanks, Marko and everyone else as well.
So as not to confuse, this is practically straight from the camera. There was a very slight levels adjustment, a custom WB, a correction for lens distortion, and a bit of sharpening. I took advantage of some options offered for .nef files through Capture NX 2 that improve (in my eye) the overall look of the raw file by removing as much noise and color moire as possible.
Primarily, this look comes from spot metering off a subject bathed in direct sun with the surrounding areas falling in shadow (light filtering through the trees, for example) and underexposing by 1/3-1 full stop. I've gotten away from matrix metering except in those situations where you have to shoot when not being able to look through the view finder. I would encourage all to work with spot metering for a while until you understand how it works and what it can do to possibly improve your photography.
Exceptional image! I love the composition and lighting.
Absolutely lovely capture with amazing lighting.
Reality is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there!
