Backroads in the Winter

Took the backroads in to work today.....all 70+ km. One particular 15k stretch was barely 1 lane wide but what a beauty of a drive. I got to be the first one thru on about 6" of fresh snow. When you could see off the road and into the bush it was a nice view. Another typical grey day though with flurries and not a hint of the sun.

love looking at it, walking in it, playing in it...but driving? no thanks! LOL.... Curious-(I have never been way north in the winter): Is the white balance true on the images? Is it really that grey? For the sake of ones mental health, I hope it is brighter than that on a regular basis, and only occasionally grey.

I agree with Susan's feeling here. Shots 1, 2 and 4 look underexposed and are greyer than they should be. They are likely underexposed because the camera meter saw so much sky and the snow reflected it. This scene is NOT normal (no even representation of times) and so it needed to be adjusted ....no camera on planet earth can do this as far as I know....the photographer needs to see this and do it.
The solution here would have been to open up (increase exposure) by a good 1.5-2 stops.

Note how shot 3 is fairly well exposed...it has a MUCH more even representation of tones so the camera meter's reading is more accurate.

Thanks to everyone for the comments. I have been enjoying the backwoods drives. As Marko noted some of the pics were a little underexposed......this thing of shooting landscapes in the winter is a bit of a challenge! I will probably get it figured out around the end of March when the snow is just about gone.

Susan....some of the darkness here is definitely a "me" problem. This series was shot on a dark grey day without even a hint of the sun....but not quite as dark as the pics show. The closer shots into the bush where I have more going on than just white snow, dark bush and grey sky came out much better. I re-shot #2 on a lighter day and it came out much better. No grey skies and no snow in the distance gave it a bit more depth.
I am not really all that far north. All my pics lately have been shot in and around Ear Falls, Ontario. Heck only 70 kms away in Red Lake I can get my Timmies! ( and I have)
