A baby garter snake sitting in a daylily plant. I have a basic digital camera and am not good at taking close-up pics - the focus is never very good. So I'm happy this turned out relatively focused - it could still definitely be sharper!

Oh what a shame his head wasn't sharply in focus ... such a cool photo.
This is a cool image and it is a shame that the snake's head is not in focus. Your camera has at least two modes, regular mode and macro mode. Macro mode is usually indicated by a little flower. In macro mode you can be as close as 2 inches or 5 cm. In regular mode you must be a minimum of 20 inches or 50 cm away to focus on the subject. Practice a bit with focus and judging distance. Macro mode for really close up stuff and make sure you are almost two feet away if you are not in macro mode.
Hi Iguanasan,
Thanks for the info - will keep trying and pay more attention to my distance!
Thanks MA too.
