thanks all, I'll take #3 as well. Interestingly enough I didn't do too much processing and actually toned down the colours in 1 &3 a bit. I did fiddle with curves though.

Just as an FYI, curves is a HUGE part of processing and can dramatically alter the look of any image as demonstrated here
