Dartmoor Landscapes

[Odyssey]

These are my first attempts at landscape photography, taken on the family holiday to Devon, in Dartmoor National Park.

The cairn on top of the highest point on Dartmoor.


I thought the portrait orientation would draw attention to this little valley.


The view from Great Mis Tor. I struggled with the exposure on this one, out of several attempts this one seemed to come out best.

Hi Odyssey:
These are nice interesting landscape shots. First one is my favorite, showing a lot of details in the rocks, very sharp focus in the foreground, and leading my eye out to the view and the clouds.
Third shot is a challenge for sure, because of the foreground shadow and lit up background. I see there are some underexposed horses to the side, and some undefined object part way down the hill in the foreground as well. You could have made these more the focus and exposed the photo with them in mind. You can almost always correct exposure problems in post-processing if you use Photoshop or even Picassa.

Thanks Mike. I did try exposing the foreground, but it blew out the background completely. I might try having a play with post-processing to try and correct it.

Nice attempts, I too favour the last shot.
A couple of points to keep in mind - sharpness - Unless it's experimental something in the shot should always be very sharp. Shot 3 looks totally soft to me.
Aperture - I think the aperture was too large for some of these shots - play around with that, it's practically every photographers most important tool. (after lighting)
Tripod - You'll need a good one to stop down for sharpness.

Thanks for your tips. Shot four is probably soft because it initially had some family members in it and I focused on them, then later cropped them out, and I guess with three I was so busy trying to get the exposure right I forgot to look at the focus.

Beautiful land you have to photograph. I would have to say #2 would be much more interesting with a little more foreground cropped out for me. It really does show the depth of the valley well.

Beautiful shots of a beautiful landscape! If you are around there you might want to give Brentor a go. I think it makes for a nice view during sunrise or sunset.
