I didn't know my camera knew that kind of language! Best I've been able to do so far.

Not bad at all. I know that when you think of blown highlights we tend to think of issues with white but red on a sunny day can be very tricky too. You've done a pretty good job with these.
#2 is my favourite here.
Getting reds like these right in bright sun is probably one of the hardest things to do with DSLR .... nicely done.
Thanks, Iggy and MA. I'm in an experimenting mode again. I reach the point where the latest thing I've been thrashing with seems to settle down a bit (usually still needs work, though), so I go find something new to thrash with. Usually driven by claims of "magic bullet technique/setting totally solves problem that drives camera and/or operator stark, raving mad!" My response is, "Okay, let's go find out!" And then I pick extreme forms of said problem.
I've got a set of roses near work that are screaming red, with bright gold centers. I think I might have figured out how to deal with those. We'll see if today's photos are consistent with yesterday's.
