A Vote for Marko's Podcasts
I've only become interested in listening to podcasts very recently and in those few weeks I listened to few different podcasters. Some were very well known and others I found through Google. Marko's podcasts are one those.
I have to say that I found most of the podcasters very difficult to listen to. Many of them are ramblers and seem to wander on incessantly, showing a distinct lack of fluidity and preparation I think.
Now this isn't to say that I could do a better job. I'm sure I quite likely couldn't. But it is to say that others can do it better. All the podcasters seem to have good subjects and deliver some good info but if I can't enjoy listening to them, then I simply won't listen. Might as well read an internet or magazine article instead.
I remember hearing Marko mention in one of his podcasts that someone once said he spoke too quickly. Marko, thankfully felt he shouldn't change how he spoke and I agree with him. About the only thing that resembles rambling in Marko's podcasts are the thanking of contributors and forum members which, frankly, is a necessity and a nice thing to do of course.
Although I do sometimes listen to other podcasters (while I wait for Marko to deliver his next edition) I find Marko's voice, style, friendly nature, obvious love for what he does, subjects, and the fluid way he speaks, to be the combination that I like best and find easiest to listen to.
If I could find a critique at all it would only be the opening music he adopted. I know Marko won't like hearing me say thatbecause he was very proud of it I think, but it's simply because I think music is a personal thing and not why I'm listening to the podcast. The music style doesn't appeal to me so I cringe at the beginning of every podcast and, if I can, I forward it through past the music. I liked the shutter sound he used in the earlier editions much more. It was simple and quick. I think music used in a podcast should be soft and easy listening and over quickly so as not to invade someones senses.
But the music's a small thing and it's over quickly. And it's just my opinion and won't be shared by many anyhow, so the music can't be judged wrong I guess.
Some podcasters sound to me like they sit down with a subject in mind but no plan or preparation. This results is a lot of umming and ahhhing and a far less targeted delivery of the information.
Marko sounds to me like he gives his podcast subjects some real thought beforehand and then makes sure he has notes to guide him through a structured delivery that results in a more concise lesson. Perhaps he'll prove me wrong and say he just wings it totally, and if so, it would only reconfirm my thought that he is good at what he does in this regard.
So, now I've re-read that it sounds like a big suck upbut really I simply believe, very strongly, in feedback, and being someone who also runs and administrates a couple of large forums of my own, I know how important it is.
