We watched 'Contact' with Jodie Foster yesterday ... errr ... the movie has Jodie Foster in it ... she didn't actually fly over and have dinner with us or anything ... although Charlie Sheen might show up seeing as he's visiting Aussie and my wife is a woman ... but I digress ... in 'Contact' Jodie and her father kept saying that "if we are alone in this universe, it's an awful big waste of space!"

If either of them drop by make sure you take their photo!

I love that quote. What amazes me about this image is that you can see the Andromeda galaxy quite clearly and what you can't possibly imagine but have to think in about is that in this entire night sky that one small object represents billions and billions (do funky Carl Sagan voice) stars each of which represents an entire solar system. Pretty freakin' hard to believe we are alone in all of that.

It sure is, especially considering that the image(s) represent an incomprehensibly small fraction of the universe. It's amazing to think that the light from Andromeda shown in the image had travelled for ~2.5 million years before it landed on that camera's sensor.. from the closest major galaxy yet! Thanks for linking that.. VERY cool.
