I've been trying out the clam-shell lighting technique for lighting children, since the soft wrap-around light seems to work well with their 'good skin'. This was one of my favourites from lasts nights experiments.
This is a discussion on Shout within the People photography (portraits, sports etc.) forums, part of the Show your photo (Color) - Landscape & Nature (flowers, mountains, storms etc.) category; I've been trying out the clam-shell lighting technique for lighting children, since the soft wrap-around light seems to work well ...
Wonderful portrait! Dig the lighting, skin tones, expression, overall sharpness![]()

what a beautiful little boy. I especially like the catch lights in his eyes-they look like stars

Great portrait of a cute little kid. Nicely done. The catchlights are interesting too!

Very cute image! Are the catch lights from flourescent photo lights and umbrella? Or pp? I like them in the little boy. In an adult I might find them too "cutesy" but in this one it suits the little guy. Very appealing portrait for sure.![]()
Hi all, thanks for the comments, personally I'm not a big fan of the catch-lights I caught here, they didn't come out at all how I expected but didn't have much time to change the se-tup before Andrew got board.
I was using a new silver/black umbrella (bought cheap on ebay), I found it created really wired unusual catch-lights, that look to much like spiders. I probably could have fixed it to a more conventional catch-light shape in post processing, but I'm really trying to get as much right in camera as possible.

Fantastic lighting Richard. The stars in the eyes are cool. The diagram is great for explaining your setup.

Beautiful shot, and excellent work on the lighting Richard.
Reality is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there!
