I wasn't sure about this when you mentioned it, but I now have gone back to the master file and adjusted it as suggested. A subtle adjustment made a big (positive) difference. Thanks for tip.
I actually have a habit of lightening shadows too much so perhaps I am overcompensating sometimes.
