One light portrait with 75" umbrella

shot this with a new 75" umbrella (16 rib), with one SB 600 and the new 50mm 1.8G lens

it really produces a huge, soft light source

I was just reading a thing on flickr where a guy changed the distribution of light within the umbrella by using that little flip out plastic panel on the head of the sb600. When the panel is engaged it uses more of the surface. Haven't tried it myself but then my brolly is tiny next to yours

I like this one too and it's a very good teaching post.
Notice how even though the light is soft, because it is just one light that is not super close to the subject, it creates a softer but still quite dramatic portrait.
The shot would likely be even more dramatic if the T-shirt was black, as the T-shirt is likely adding some reflection.

Thanks Richard, actually this umbrella stands about 2" taller than me.
