I've been thinking about a blog for a long time. I was thinking more about it today actually while at work. We have been trying to decide whether to use a generic bog site like Blogger or to build our own. I want to look more closely into how people find your blogs before I decide what to do.

If I do go ahead with the blog idea it wouldn't be a day to day ramble about my life, it would be specific to photography and most likely aimed at helping newer photographers grasp the different techniques and PP I use to achieve my photos.

I'd then use the blog to direct people to our web design website. This is a marketing strategy that works very well for getting your website further up the google rankings.

I follow a few of these and really enjoy them. Let me know if you start on MA, I'd definitely follow it. (or is it stalking? , I am already following/stalking Iggy...)

If it's just a personal blog then I'd say blogger is fine. It is SIMPLE to set up.

If you have any 'business' aspirations I would stay away from Blogger. If you use blogger you need to use the address (URL) they give you... you cannot have a blogger blog on markokulik.com for example. The address would always be something like http://markokulik.blogspot.com/ and LIVES on google's servers not yours. The blog attached to THIS site has the following address Photography Podcast, Photography Blog: Photography.ca It lives on our server and we can do whatever we want with it.

Wordpress is king of the blogs and is free. There is SO Much more customization that can be done with wordpress and there are jillions of pluggins/themes that are SO useful. The VAST majority of Non personal bloggers use wordpress. There is a hosted version at wordpress.com and a NON hosted version at wordpress.org

The advantage of wordpress.com is the setup and upgrade help. But there are strict rules...like you cannot show ads and other rules. Still you do have more customization on the look.

Personally, Unless the blog will always stay 100% personal. Wordpress.org is totally the way to go. Because it's so popular, many developers can customize your "look" for you...

    Hope that helps - Marko

Thanks for that obviously informed opinion on Blogger vs adding wordpress to our existing site Marko. Very helpful. If wordpress is suitable for our needs it saves us developing our, personal blog.

Wordpress, and I'm just learning like everyone else, is extremely powerful.
Not only is it a perfect blogging tool, but it is also versatile and powerful enough to run entire websites.

    and it's free.

There's no need at all to reinvent the wheel. and there plenty of wordwide developers because it's opensource. (This means that the code is freely available for others to use an/or improve upon) Marko

If anyone is looking for something to do career-change-wise, learning the ins and outs of wordpress (either design-wise or coding-wise(custom coding) ) is super hot now and I can see it hanging for quite a while.

Another nice thing about Wordpress is most if not all service providers offer and automated install. No need to understand how to get it up and running. This goes for other open source products like Zenphoto. I use Fat Cow they are cheap and easy.
