Damn, that sucks, I got head butted by my old pit bull once and that was bad enough. He damn near knocked me out...

You just need to come up with a heroic story for how it happened when you go for your tree. Something like you had to chase the horse down because it had been spooked and in the process you came across a bank robbery in progress, broke that up and continued on your way after the horse until you finally caught him and soothed him and rode him home for some oats and an apple.
