Google has been improving the quality of their work. I have seen some comparisons of Google tours compared to tours done by VR photographers and the main difference is quality of light, resolution and smoothness of the experience. The VR guys can wait for the light while the Google guys are on a schedule.
Nah, it just isn't the same as actually being there. But it's a pretty cool gadget, I must admit...

Neat..but I really would like to go!
Just be sure to get a nice tour or something. If it just you on your own, it's all a boring piles of stones. You really need the stories behind them to truly understand the place. Then, history truly can come alive...
Same goes for most of Rome (which you should see as well if you're there). The Roman Forum is only interesting when somebody tells you about all the great things that went on there...
Usually you can camp right outside of the city for almost nothing. Just catch a bus or metro to the city centre and you're good to go. Me and my girlfriend went there for about three weeks for just a couple of bucks. Just get used to eating a lot of canned pasta though...
