Very cool! I've always been a subscriber to the fun is more productive theory.
I wonder though, once the novelty has worn off, that all the people who have seen the stairs before will simply return to old habits and use the esculator again. They may even become annoyed at the stairs if they see them every day and have to listen to the 'noise' they make.
It would certainly work indefinitely for kids and first time patrons though.
