Too bad your not driving, I just love the ferry ride and you can never know what you will see on the ride over, I would suggest L'Anse aux Meadows just worth going to. Also this is the celebration of Captain Bob Bartlett. Signal Hill is also a great place to go. If I can remember any other places I will mention them, been a few years since I was last there.

Speaking of Gros Morne..I never did this but family has... ice burgs!

Take a boat cruise on Western Brook Pond, a glacier-carved fjord in Gros Morne National Park.

lighthousepicnics.ca in Ferryland (about an hour outside of St. John's) -- I'd definitely recommend that. Its right next door to the Colony of Avalon, another attraction. In St. John's, the typical choices include Signal Hill, Cape Spear, George Street...the Rooms...and so on.
I'd also recommend Gros Morne - the Western Brook Pond fiord tour.
If your friend would like to go off the beaten path...I'd recommend a day or two on Fogo Island -- making sure to visit Tilting and Joe Batt's Arm. Its a ferry ride over.

    From my newfie cousin!
