Default I knew I should have wiped the hard disk first

I spent the weekend upgrading the main PC to Windows 7 (64 bit, this time. More memory is next on the list). Took things slow. I've been through this a time or three. Took a backup and used MS' transfer program and did a separate archive of the entire Documents and Settings folder tree.

Everything written says that if you're upgrading from XP, all your stuff will be gone. After installing 7 and letting it update I had - a dual boot system. Not what I wanted, since my 2 hard drives aren't that large. And I finally remembered that I went through this when I upgraded one of the laptops. So I DBANed the hard disk and started again. Most of my stuff got moved with the transfer program. My browser settings, plugins, email folders and settings were nowhere to be seen. Which is why I archived Documents and Settings.

As the title says - I should've gone with my gut and wiped the disk to begin with.

Ahh, that sucks... yeah, that's my process too.. wipe the disk and start fresh. The results are always so much more pleasing.

I've gotten the major stuff back in place, but have been taking it slow putting stuff on. Decided I'd wait until I needed various things, including Java. That vulnerability hasn't been an issue, because nothing I've run so far has asked for Java. I'm thinking a lot of software can just stay off until I can't do something I want to do without it.
