Thanks Runmonty! I discovered Photography.ca the other day and added it to my list of favorite forums on my website.
I'll try to come around regularly and share my work.

OK, you've inspired me to pp another shot from yesterday, in which there is a doorway visible. Barely!
This was a bit of a grab shot as I walked by, since I didn't want to upset the dog walkers by aiming a camera at them.
Nevertheless, I still like the overall composition, and the dog walkers balance each other out.
Location: Claremont Colleges, Claremont CA. My wife was recently watching the Gilmour Girls on Netflix and when they visited "Yale", it was filmed on this lawn.
I was shooting from Stover Walk (top to bottom of the satellite view) with the Little Bridges auditorium in the background.
Glad I got out yesterday; it's raining today.

Do you have to open that door or can you dive right in?
That's a great shot.

might also make a good podcast....hmmmm
For me.... 'artsy' or rather Good artsy - is not hit or miss....it's the product of practise. Practise/study more....and you'll get artsier photos that aren't crap.
The same rule applies to regular photography as well. When too much post-processing happens it's not a photo for me anymore, it's mixed media. Your shot 2 falls into this category for me. (JMO though)
