Hi all,
My name is Nicole. I've been listening to the podcast for some time now. I'm an amateur photographer. I did photography as an elective at uni, mostly black & white film. I'm just getting back into it after having a baby (she's now 2!). I've mostly taken baby/kids shots & am looking to improve from snap shots to photographs.

I'd really like to show examples of photographs I like by other photographers & learn how to take similar shots. What is the correct way of doing this? I know it's wrong to save the photo & upload it. Is it ok to embed it or post a link?

Thanks again for the podcast. I'm really excited to improve my work as I love photography. Attach is a photograph of my daughter.

welcome. My babies are 19 and 21!!!
there are lots of good photographers here to learn from and they will you lots of advice. To post in the forum you can either link from a website (like flickr) or upload from your computer. If you upload it should be less then 275k (hope I have that right) otherwise the software compresses the photo and makes it soft.

Welcome to the discussion side of the podcast The best way to share photos taken by other people that you would like to use as examples is to simply link to them. Posting them is not appropriate unless you first get their permission and give them credit when you post.

Thanks Bambi! I had a look at your blog. What a great idea to display your work & journey. Such a good way to learn. I was just starting to experiment with black & white post processing techniques. I love you BW garden photo, it's really interesting.

Another quick question...is it ok etiquette to ask someone how they took a shot or about their post processing techniques? There are some amazing photos on this site & I'd love to learn how to make my photographs look more like them!

Yes it is fine to ask somehow their technique and processing methods. Occasionally you might encounter a secretive photographer using some unusual method who won't answer your question, but that's rare and presumably only for commercial reasons i.e. they are planning on selling their photos and don't want competitors. Having said that, it's only happened to me once - the vast majority of people will be happy to share details.

It's not only OK but encouraged. As thoughton said, you may find some people who are secretive about their methods but I don't think you'll find them here on photography.ca. Everyone here has always been willing to share. Some more than others, but I've never seen anyone refuse.
