    Default How Would you .....

In Toronto in May we have the Contact Photo Show, the show over various locations gets about a million visitors to the various Galleries involved. I am one of the featured Photographers this year and I have less than 20 days to get another 6 photos out that I need to pick to hang for the show along with what I have already there and two other galleries. Well not 20 days really, the gallery wants the print names and sizes I only have 20 days to get them the actual photos framed and ready to hang, I am sure they would like the info about my choices last week.

My usual method is leave it until the very last minute and go strictly on gut feeling, been working so far but this is maybe one event I want to show a variety of work and have it a thought out process. So how would you go about making the decision on what to hang for a gallery show? None of my Concert photography is involved, I like to keep the two separate for some weird reason. Now I thinking I might be making a mistake, I dunno, any suggestion would be helpful, maybe ignored and I will fall back on my proven method but maybe someone will inspire me with an idea. Frames, Matting and all that is not an issue, I just need to give a days heads up with a frame place I am dealing with now.

What I generally do for shows, contests, etc is to pick a large sample of images that cover the genre that I want to represent (Say 20 images for every one required) and then show them to friends, family, and photographers, and then submit the ones which seem least popular. Why? Because generally what John & Jane Q. Public like (assuming they're not photographers or artists) is NOT what wins contests, or appeals to the "artsy" crowd.

I usually do the mixture of the two. Grab several photos and gut feeling.

I think you know deep down inside what images you want. Many times I can show two photos for something and everyone will pick one but if it's not the one I had "deep down inside" it's not the one.

I say follow your gut. Then again..ha ha..I've never really gotten very fair with that. :P

Well I sent the gallery and email and asked them to give until next Wednesday, that way I have time to give some thought and if I am not happy or over thinking my choices I have an imposed deadline so the gives the go with the gut feeling choice, which I figure will be the only thing to get me off my ass. I may get an email in the morning giving me until Friday so just hope they can wait until the first of April.
