Carpe Diem

"Carpe Diem" as most people know is translated from a Latin poem to mean roughly "Seize the Day" and is often used as a term for also making the most out of any given moment or time.

In terms of photography we might afford ourselves some leniency and translate 'Carpe Diem' as something like "Take the Photo before the Opportunity is Lost."

It might be an opportunity that may never rise again for you. It might just be an opportunity that is very difficult to capture.

I'm wondering then ...

Have you found yourself in this moment and taken a photo you treasure?

Well.. I find that the moment I don't take my camera, that is the time I could of used it the most! It never fails.

I do have one shot that I consider my Carpe Diem shot. My little man did this for all of 2 mins and I have never seen him do it again, nor can I get him too. I just had the camera out at the right moment! It is one I treasure with my heart!!!

I know this is off topic but how do I get my photos from flickr to show, or make my images come out better...lol. There is quite a difference between the low res flickr and this one!!!

I spoke about this in another thread. The board software shrinks uploaded images and makes them fuzzy and soft. I've taken to linking in my images. Here's how to do it with Picasa Web Albums: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVnNssUNoak The process would be the same only you need the image URL from Flickr.

I have two shots. They were during fishing excursions with my father.

The first one was taken in Alabama. We used to wake up in the morning and the fog was so dense, I had to wait to get a picture until it cleared a little, otherwise you wouldn't know what the picture of. It was a wide open lake with very few people around, plus you could see some of the alligators.

The last two are from Rainy Lake in Canada. Another fishing excursion. To me, being so far away from town was extraordinary and I could not let it go. Something about being that far away from urban society and having to rely on yourself 100% was fantastic. The first is my standing underneath some BRIGHT stars, the second is the scene at night.

In wedding photography, I always try to get those special candid moments between family members and the bride or groom. Shots like when the bride's father looks at his daughter tenderly. Those shots are gold when you can get them but you have to be fast.
I've taken quite a few shots like this and they are wonderful.
....and I've missed a few a well.

Here's two for you:
1. This one surprised me- It was over a year ago. I still had my Nikon D70 and had just mounted a new 55-200VR lens that had arrived in the mail, bought off eBay. We're talking about a $200 consumer grade lens here, nothing extraordinary. I think this was literally the first shot I took with it just playing around to test it in our kitchen, spur of the moment, in P mode.... entirely just a point'n'shoot kinda situation.
2. This one took some patience to choose the right moment, but was worth it. I call it "Getting your Ducks in a Row" (or should I call it "Bottoms Up"?)
