Building a Portfolio

This is probably an age old question for experienced photog's trying to break into the industry. With our economy as rough as it has been here, it is a matter of finding employment anywhere you can. I have a friend in Alaska that is into architecture and works with people in the design field. He told me to give him my resume and he would shop me around on his behalf. Since I have a Business Mgt degree, its not exactly design oriented. He suggested that I put together a portfolio together. The problem is, I have two of them. Well one left from the two after a couple photo contests. Since they are both filled with 8x12s and are leather bound, they are bulky and heavy and cant send them from Ohio to Alaska. He suggested picking out a dozen or so images that are really outstanding. To me, that is not a problem. Since we all have our own personal favorites, how can you help decide whether or not images are worth putting into a portfolio. A top ten of sort. With so many images taken for so many different purposes, how can you decide which ones to pick. A dozen seems awfully tough to do. So, how do you pick your top 10 or 12 images to put into a 'portfolio' that is going to be used almost 3000 miles away?

I understand a website would be much more effective at this since you can upload all of them. I do not have one, and have no idea where or how to attempt this. It would be something I would want to do myself since it would be worked through the design industry. Any input would be great. Thanks again.
