Cool Another Day With Jay Maisel

Originally filmed live on Monday, the crew takes another walk around New York City with Jay Maisel and ends in his famous home, a 114 year old bank in the Bowery.

This is a very well done show, but Jay's philosophy on photography is always an interesting listen.

What does he photograph? Colour, "the gesture", light. His philosophy on street photography? Go out empty. Rid yourself of any preconceived notions and be open to what is out there. There are lots of Jay's witticisms here, but his explanation of "not leaving footprints in the snow" most impressed me. He believes that once you see a photo, the composition is already there, it is really more about the framing and cropping you choose. The image should make you feel something but without the heavy hand of the photographer being present. If someone says, great composition, you have already failed, the photographer's hand should not be apparent and the picture should not be about the artifice used but instead about what he wants to show you, or the emotion he wants to evoke. He explains it much better than I.

Joining the Kelby training for a month, if you are not already a member, is well worth it just for this one interview alone but you may want to go look up the other interview he did as well. Always inspiring, Jay Maisel, will
    give your spirits a lift.

I agree. I haven't seen the whole thing yet but I will soon! I'm going to join up as soon as I know I'm going to have a bit more free time so I can watch all the videos I can in the one month... Maybe it'll justify a second...

The guy is 80 years old and still going strong. He has a tremendous body of work spanning 57 years. Here is a little vignette:
