Which lens graces your camera..

The Nikon 50mm 1.4D is so cheap (as in $$$ not quality) that every Nikon shooter should have one. The G is a little more but a lot of people are getting rid of their D in auctions. I love this lens.

The Nikon kit lens for the d90 is my "always on in case something happens" lens. One, both of them are covered by a good warranty. Drop it and it breaks... covered. My other lenses are not covered.

My go to lens is my 24-70 Canon L f/2.8. It has very crisp optics, I find with my camera crop it gives me most of the ranges I shoot at. That being said I never go out to shoot without at least 3 lenses.

On my Pentax K110d, Im using a Tamron 70-300 with the macro function. It is really sharp for some applications, but others it is not so good. It is more of a utility setup, that I'm willing to let get beat up.
The other is a Sony Alpha 100. It is using the kit lens, 18-70. Have not really found it necessary to jump out and get new glass for it. Since I usually carry both cameras with me, I can hit pretty much everything. Wide angle, telephoto, and then two versions of macro. Its nice to be able to go from 18-300 without switching lenses. If you cant get a shot with those selections, then I should reconsider this hobby.

I have the Nikkor 18mm-135mm f3.5-5.6G and the 50mm 1.4D

I have lots of hockey and animal life I would like to start shooting so looking at another lens to better suit that. Any suggestions..would love to hear them!

Acutally, next purchase will be a flash and Lightroom 2.

I don't know anything about nikon lenses so can't recommend anything specific, but for animals/sports, I'd probably suggest a longer zoom (200mm or more) to be able to fill the frame with the subject.

If you want to shoot hockey at a distance, you'll need something fast no matter what. Probably @200 to 400mm. I would get a prime just because of the price at that level. You can get really fast primes - problem: you will miss some shots because you will have to move your body and not the zoom.

You can probably shoot animal life with the same lens. I shoot sports and animals from a tripod no matter what. Sometimes I have to drop a tripod for sports and go with a monopod because of restrictions or space. The monopod matters but I think getting a good ball head is even more important.

Keep in mind that you will spend upwards of $1500 and easily more on these lenses. Double it for the VR. I think a 300mm 2.8 VR is around $8,000. Now, there are others. You can spend $300 (probably way less) on a Tamron 70-300... but you are trying to get that 2.8 not a 4.5.

Back to the subject matter. I realized something about my 50mm 1.4 - when I put that on one of my D90's it has never come off. What is so perfect about the lens. The Bokeh pattern is beautiful. I hit 1/2000 shutter speed at 1.4 on a cloudy day in the shade. So yeah, it has never come back off. When I only have one lens to go to, that would be it. But then again, I always shoot people.

My 'go to' lens is the Nikkor 24-70 2.8.
