I like this image. I like the compositional elements.

In terms of things to improve, this photo has a bit of a harsh feel, perhaps due to over-sharpening - or the actual lighting. Parts of this photo look oversaturated especially the water in the background. If the exif data is correct and it was taken at about 13:46:21 then that could well account for the harshness as you are working with harsh shadows from a harsh sun. The shot might also be underexposed a bit. I'd love to see the same shot under softer lighting conditions.

For me, the stump or rock under the boat as well as the deep black shadows under the boat are distractions. I might also darken the boat itself a weeee bit.

You are close to a good 'recipe' though (as the photo does have a variety of tones throughout most of the image)and I can see the learning

Yes the time is right. I also felt it would be harsh but I thought the composition would be good and was not fair for me to leave without taking the picture.

The water I agree is bit saturated but that is not due to post-processing but the original image is also a bit saturated. I have tried to play around with curves a bit.

Well, here is my second try and hope that it has improved.

I think this version is better! You must keep in mind though that with harsh lighting like this you get deep deep shadows as you see here. I too, OF COURSE, would have taken the shot if i were there though. A touch of fill from an on camera (or off) flash would have helped here.

I'd burn in the sky a wee bit more (shot 1 had a better sky) and maybe sharpen the canoe a bit more.
