Well, I think that if you show more of the shell, it is going to become more the main subject. And since you probably want to focus on the ring, that might not be the right way to go. As for the DOF, I recon you want to give a sense of dept to the picture. It's working, but I agree that a little more would increase the effect.
I do have some doubts about the reflection. Usually this gives a nice symmetry, but I don't think it's helping in this picture. Without it, the image would be just as strong, but without the reflection attracting attention away.
Also, give some thought about how to highlight the item you want to be the center of attention. I'm guessing it's the ring in this case. It's not really getting me. It just doesn't jump out of the picture, you know what I mean? There are several way's to do this. Giving it some extra light and making it brighter than the shell works, since our eye's naturally go towards the light. This might be an idea.
This is a pretty difficult shot to make. I think you've done a great job so far. I really like the idea of putting the ring in a shell like some kind of pearl. The background is beautifully simple and non-distracting. Really good job so far!
Listen, three eyes, don't you try to outweird me, I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal.
Thank you 42. This image I took was done on my kitchen top with a small amount of light from the window. I will retry again with more light and see how it comes out. The flash light directly mounted onto the camera does not work, have tried it and it reflects to much. So I will need to find another way with the light. Thanks
I agree with 42. One suggestion for the light is to do a long shutter speed and use a small led light trained on the ring. This might also work in colour.

A painter takes their vision and makes it a reality. A photographer takes reality and makes it their vision.
I'm loving that I have to type so little these days First off nice creativity and thinking here.
I too think this shot might work better in colour.
and I agree w/42 on all aspects of his critique. (I'd nix the reflection - the ring in the shell is a cool concept in and of itself.)

I'm in agreement with the rest. When I first looked I couldn't quite tell what I was looking at. The reflection is not working for me at all. It sort of makes two subjects in this context and I don't think that's what you want.
thank you for the input and advice. I am playing around with some more ideas with rings, I did also take some other ones without the reflection. When I am finished with the other I will add them for more critique
