Comments and critiques please. I am new to digital photography and really want to learn. I won't be insulted or offended so no need to go gentle

I know that the contrast and colors need to be worked out. I need to learn photoshop

C&C per req:

1. Nice image, good composition using the lines or rocks to bring the eye down to the boat, however there's a lot of 'unused' space in the ocean and sky; perhaps a closer crop?

2. Nice again, I like the sense of openess that this image brings, however I'd suggest cropping out the just a bit of the foreground to eliminate the large dark area image centre. Both this and #1 would have benefitted from the use of a Grad ND to enhance the sky and reduce the dynamic range.

3. Very interesting. I like this, however think it might be better with the lighthouse a little less centreed.

4, 5. Nice images, well composed, but overall, somewhat less than exciting. 5 would be much improved by a levels & curves adjustment to reduce the extreme shadow on the rocks.

Hi Baddness,

In future the quality of critique can be improved by posting only one or two images at a time.

For me, the strongest image from the set is image #1 simply because the boat adds a splash of colour. The triangle of stones leading to the boat is interesting. The sky is a little flat. This is a minor nag but I would have moved the boat so the engine head isn't tangled with the pole.

Some of the other images look under exposed on my screen. As Tiredon suggested, you may have compromised on exposure settings so the sky is not blown out. A graduated ND filter would help with this. Look into the Cokin P series if your gonna stick with landscapes. They allow you to slid the filter to fit the specifics of the image.

I love east coast pictures.

Hi baddness,

Although we have not made it a rule, please post only 1 image or 2 per thread. We like to give detailed critiques and 5 photographs in a thread is a bit much to get detailed critiques on each.


For me the last shot is the strongest shot in this series.
The sky without details is causing problems in shots 1 and 3 and shot 2 is too dark.

In shot 4 the sky has a foggy feel that does work. The foreground elements can be improved though, possibly by zooming in more and cutting out a bit of sky.

Shot 5 is very graphic and has a really nice feel. My eye is being lead to the water in the central part of the image. It has a good mood. The rocks ARE a bit dark but lightening them (10-15% perhaps) shouldn't be too hard and should really improve the photo.

Thanks for the C & C guys. I decided to venture out of the "auto" zone on my canon. I know that I need lots more practice and to learn photoshop.

Sorry about posting so many pics on here. Next time I'll keep it down to 1 or 2.
