Just some opinions

Ok I am having some sleepless nights so I went for a drive into the Downtown Toronto ( a 10 minute drive if I take my time ) and thought I would practice my night shots. Here is one of them, I am just curious if they are turning out ok. I am not to worried about the composition but more about the technical aspects such as clarity, noise, exposure and such. Just trying to get good sharp clear night images then I will work on the composition of them. Here is a link to a larger copy for those who may need to see a larger version. No editing except a crop was done, this was taken from the RAW image and converted to JPG with no editing.

Yes a tripod was used with a shutter cable and mirror was locked.

These are really hard to do well and I think you have done a very good job in all the technical aspects you have mentioned (clarity, noise, exposure)

The thing you didn't want us to critique (composition) is the missing element here and IMO you have solved the technical stubling blocks and can now focus on composition.

Well just plunked my tripod down and shoot a bunch of photos, was paying attention to exposure, aperture, iso, mirror lock, etc. so next outing will combine the two and try and work on composure for night photos. My last outing made a ton of mistakes and overlooked so much and this time I wanted to make sure I had remembered the tech stuff, composition is a whole other matter for night shots for me. Just need to practice now, the warm weather is on its way so should be getting much more night time shots.

I took a close look at the image and it is soft, which is most noticeable when looking at the centre 2 buildings. That of course could be due to very slight camera movement, focus problem, or a lens issue.

Now that my eye has been drawn to it, I too can see softness in the right center building way in the distance. But overall my eyes were not distracted by sharpness issues.

On a six second exposure I would wager that the downtown movement of heavy motor vehicles could also cause the tripod or camera to shake slightly.

i like how youve caught the front and tail lights from the cars, as well as how the street lights turned out. the red/pink sign on the side of the building is nice as well, though the beginning of the word is cut off... i think its a great attempt at that style of nighttime photography, and if you can find a spot where the composition may turn out better, you'll be capturing some fantastic shots! good job!

By the way, why did you cut a letter off the beginning of the word on the building at the left side? It creates a distraction.

I know its distracting lol, but it was what I shot. I was on the road jumped on then off, today I was standing on the yellow line divider to get some shots that required it to get a proper photo and had cars whizzing by on both sides. I said this one was just more for getting the technique down, composition is what I am working on now. I have had my DSLR for maybe 6 or 8 weeks now so pretty happy with where I am. It was over 20 years since I last used an SLR and shot only in B&W so this is so new to me. I need to work up to Greatness lmaooo, just kidding, as I always say, take me with a grain of salt lol. This is a fun and wonderful hobby to me.
