May I suggest some websites such as some areas of this one and the podcasts as well as www.photoinf.com. There are composition guidelines for taking particular types of photos that it would be helpful for you to know. For those with a lot of experience, we don't even think about them anymore, but a beginner has a lot to pick up.
One of the basic guidelines is that everything in the foreground should be sharp and infocus which means that the first shot has a major problem.
The second one has very good colour, texture, exposure and a shallow depth of field which works well together.

i understand about the forground being in focus rule, and for sure i agree it normally makes for a better photo. for the above picture though, i liked breaking that rule because it kind of brings your eye in through the trees, like you're actually looking into the forest...
