Dwayne Oakes has a similar scene on his site you can look at. His does not have fall colors, and it looks like he used a CP filter to cut distracting reflections from the water, and it also appears he has less sky coming through the trees. Worth a look, as I am struggling with the same issues in some of my shots. I have one I would like to process more and then post - just need some time to dedicate to it.

I believe Bambi's using the same as I am. Gimp. There is an Orton plug-in. On my last one I set the blur radius to 30 and opacity 90.

So when you run the plug-in it creates a new layer of its own accord? If not, then create the new layer(duplicate background) yourself and then run the plug-in on the top layer. that'll give you an extra option in regards to opacity.

It seems to work better most of the time, in my view, if its applied in as subtle manner as possible. I'll even wait to sharpen the image after I've done everything else.

Yeah, the "Script-Fu" lets you select a blur radius of 0 to 99 and an opacity of 0 to 100. It then creates a duplicate layer and performs the sharpen/blur to the respective layers and adjusts the opacity to the top layer. Handy all-in-one and it's considerably cheaper than Photoshop.
