This is a discussion on Yellow Calla Lilies in Bowl within the Critiques forums, part of the Photography & Fine art photography category; Ok, I think I have it now. I wish I had a porcelain vase for this but had to use ...
Yep, that's looking very nice. As you say ... shame it's not a real vase. Maybe show less of the glass?
Raiven, these are some great images. I skipped the middle page of this thread but am just now getting to see what I missed. WOW! Im glad your image was nominated, it really deserves this. Im wondering now, what is it that your doing for these shots as far as lighting wise? How long have you been practicing this? It is a great job. There is definitely a story or something that inspired these creations. Please share.
PS - I like the glass myself

Photography is more than just taking a picture and freezing the action, or leaving the shutter open. It is more than orchestrating the image with the stroke of a brush. Its the realization and explanation that reality is an isolated experience in which only a specific individual can comprehend during any given time period. - Your Truly!
Thanks, jj. I have a black and white of tulips in my kitchen that is similar. I do not know who the photographer was but I always liked it. I wanted to try it but did not know exactly how without studio lighting. I am guessing they used a studio light with a snood. I got the effect by using my sb600 with a paper bag wrapped around it to get the directional effect. I turned off the lights and used a black background and held the flash (attached to a cord) at 90 degrees to the camera. The cord is not that long so I had to set my fstop and shutter speed fairly high. It's a lot of trial and error, basically.
