Exploring B/W

Couldn't what forum this one belongs in so I figured here would do seeing as critique is probably what's going to help me the most.

I've never really looked into B/W much before. Always been a colour boy. But now I've explored a fair bit of the colour scene I thought I'd look at some B/W.

So what I've done is search through and chosen some photos and converted them to B/W.

I'm happy for people to critique them of course, but I'd also like to know if there are any I've chosen that people think are particularly suited to B/W and also if any are not.

I sometimes have a hard time with B&W. Sometimes I'll do it and it looks great/the next moment it doesn't.

For me, the winner would be the big waterfall (with a little bit of dodge on the right side of the falls).

The others really didn't pop out at me.

I don't mind 2nd shot. After looking at is again..would love to see the color one to compare. (Flowing water)

The flower photo is too dark for me.

When I first started seeing the rock one with the man and splash the rocks looked really good but I found it hard to see the splash.

The boardwalk is okay - but I've seen it in color and would rather that.

Besides that..I would like to see them in color..I think they would be better in color...

And that would be my critique for the morning...

Well, they are all good shots. There is one thing about B&W photography, it takes practice, and a lot of it. To me, B&W is meant to show dramatic contrast and show textures certain textures more so than color.. I have only just begun to explore black and white images, so take this with a grain of salt. Again, these are all good shots. 5 is probably the best suited compared to the rest. If not 5 then 6. The rest would prefer to be seen in color. A preference thing though. Nice job in any case.

nice shots MA. too many in one thread to really give a crit on though... favs of mine for B&W are #2 & #5

Thanks everyone. It's interesting to see what people are picking as suitable. It gives me a clue or two.

I'll try to remeber to add the colour shot of the 2nd photo later for Kat's comparison.
