I don't understand why the files I upload aren't at full size. Breaks my heart the hit they're taking.

The forum auto resizes to keep the bandwidth down a bit and photos to a reasonable size. Otherwise someone who doesn't know how to resize might put upa whopper and we'll all be scrolling our little tooshes off

Maybe do what I do and use an online gallery like photobucket or Flickr. Don't use picasaweb as it doesn't display photos in forum well either.


The photo itself looks a little soft and I think lacks contrast. I find the masts all a bit busy and messy too I think.

It may be more effective as a selective colour photo if there are several items of similar colour.

Actually, what I was talking about is that I resize and save a copy at, or just a shade under, the 150kb Marko allows and they still upload to the site at way less than 100kb. Maybe I do go a little beyond the widest dimension that Marlo suggest, but I can’t imagine anyone having to scroll to see a 700 x ??? image.

I’ve got photobucket, flickr, picasa, and deviant art accounts, but there’s less to keep track of if you’re able to just upload a decent copy of your resized images to the site where you want to display them. After they’re up you can just toss the image and be done with it. Our club site allows posting of images of up to 400kb and 800px x ??? for the critique, sharing, and challenges. They do place a smaller size limit on them when building albums. It’s nice to be able to look into an image rather than just at it.

Anyway, thanks for your comments. The next time I head Down East, I’ll mention to the little village of Oriental, NC that they might want to consider cleaning up their skyline a bit. I have an old folder full of selective color images that I seldom open anymore. I lost interest in the technique some time ago. It’s survived several cleanings of the ‘ol hard drive, but may not make it through another.

I agree with MA on the contrast here; it needs a boost. For me the real issue is focal point. There's no one place that draws us in if you know what i mean, and it looks a bit messy. Perhaps if you had chosen a different angle with a repeating pattern of boats, or selectively focused on one boat, but in this shot my eyes are confused.
Hope that makes sense.
