I like with the flash, but the glare on the plastic over the old newspaper in background irks me.
Much prefer the no flash version.
Personally I like the tones in 2nd shot as it is, but if you want the "look" of the first one but without the reflections, try a curves adjustment on the "no flash" shot (the presets or auto may get you close).
Shot 2 is underexposed in the shadows - but I prefer it over the flash version.
Maybe you tried to selectively salvage the shadows in pshop?

I vote for the second one. The lights on the background of the first are pretty distracting.
