    Default Star-burst Head

So this morning while picking out a CD to listen to in the car I looked at the cover art. It was creative and I wanted to try and duplicate it, so I sat down this evening and took some photos. Some challenges I had are the lens flare from the flash shooting directly into the lens. I tried a polarizer, but this cut away all of the glow I needed. This is what I managed to get out of the pictures I took. Please tell me what you think.

Below is the photo from the album cover I was trying to mimic. Artist Remy Zero, album Golden Hum.

I like it a lot, you may want to make it a tad smaller. Is this an actual photo or did you layer the flash over your face?

OK I could make it smaller by adjusting curves, and highlights. This is a real photo as I would assume the album cover is too. I put my camera on a tripod set it at ISO 100, stopped down the aperture all the way to get the star-burst effect, and set the shutter to 30 seconds. When the shutter opened up I flashed the camera lens from where I was sitting with about half power and fully zoomed in, then set it aside out of the frame. Then I sat very still in the position you see until the exposure was over and the shutter closed. For the lighting I had one 55 watt fluorescent bulb off to my side. I thought of a minor tweak to make it better, but I don't have an assistant. I may try again when my friend comes over.

I don't get it, is the camera just over your shoulder and you are shooting into a mirror or is just the flash just over your shoulder, fired remotely?

Great shot maybe worth experimenting some more when your friend comes around and then you ll have more images to choose from to see which works best.

I was holding the flash in front of my face, it was not attached to my camera. I had the flash in manual, and used the test button to fire it. Since it was such a long exposure and I used the flash quickly and set it aside you don't see me holding the flash. Also it wasn't into a mirror I shot it with the camera in front of me.

    Thanks for the comments everyone!

Well here's my fix. I think you're right about making it smaller, now it's about head sized.
