The size limit of 100K is a problem because considerable compression is needed to get down to that size. Some of my originals average 30 meg.
The results of compression to 100K are pixellation, artifacts, picture noise, and compression of the histogram affecting shadow colours and detail and or midtones. Even highlights that have detail in the original can be washed out in the compression process. Sharpness can also deteriorate and banding can appear through loss of tones in the small jpeg image.
If the server can handle 16 bit jpegs (some editors will produce them) or other 16 bit formats it would help. At the same time, critiquing an image becomes less valuable if the uploaded image due to compression is considerably different from the original.

Perhaps I should not even ask this, but why do some of the photos that I have looked at here not meet the size limit.Originally Posted by marko

Mine were too big so I slacked them off to meet the limits. I hadn't noticed the file size requirements before. My question is, If I'm hosting the files on my site, what does it matter what size they are? Just wondering
Never mind...I just read the sticky link.

I have a remote site to host my photos but the HTML on this forum is turned off so my img insert links do not work.
I've probably missed the obvious, but do these image size limits not apply when inserting an image from, e.g., flickr ? Also, what are the max dimensions (width and height) I should be using when linking from flickr ?
See Christopher Steven B. Photography for recent wedding and engagement photos.
These restrictions do not apply when inserting a flickr image.
RM posted a how to that's really good here How to get the static Flickr URL
