Quebec City

Hi,

This is a shot I got recently from my trip to Quebec City. I kinda like the shot, but feel something is missing. Please comment.

I remember that view from when I was there though it was a tad warmer as I was there in August

It is well exposed as you can see lots of detail in both the shadows and the snow. Everything seems to be reasonably sharp in terms of focus. It's hard to tell but the horizon seems off by a tick though that might just be from the lens as this looks to be quite a wide angle.

I have almost the same shot but in summer and I kind of thought the same thing - that it was missing something. This is a great "postcard" shot but it's missing emotional content. If there had been a dramatic sky or a more interesting tone to the light or a fresh layer of snow covering everything.

Sorry, not much help but maybe someone else has a suggestion.

It's kinda cool scene really ... at least to this sunbaked Aussie it is! 31 c here today again ... quite cool after working all day in the shed at work at temps reaching 39c!!

What's missing?? Hmm ... I guess I'd have liked to see more of the square at the bottom of the shot ... it feels a bit cut off to me. I realize though that your lens may have limited your composition in this way.

Is that a bay in the background of this shot? It looks like in summer that area would be full of boats and fish instead of ice

No, that's a river. The St. Lawrence to be specific and yes, actually, it's full of ships heading into and out from the Great Lakes.

This is a decent shot but for me it's missing a strong focal point or an interplay between foreground, midground and background or more dramatic lighting over the whole scene.

For me, the most interesting part of this shot is the lower right. That's where my attention keeps going. (Just my 2 cents)

Yeah, it's that beam of white light that lights up the courtyard that really draws your eye. Interesting, it grabs me too.

Cheers Iggy. That makes it much clearer. I think we'd call that an Estuary over here at the mouth of the river.

Haha... Thanks Iguanasan! You knew exactly where this place is. It's actually my first time at Quebec City. Its so beautiful that I vow to go back again in summer time. One reason being that this time I was there it's extremely cold (-40C w windchill) and it makes it very difficult to take pictures. My batteries died so fast!

-40c is so far below my comprehension it's rediculous! I think -8c was about the coldest I'm been in.

Thanks for the comment. It's actually funny that I had the same argumet with my girlfriend. She like this one much more than another similar one I took that did not include the painted wall on the lower right. =)
