In camera HDR

I see the The Sony A550 with Auto HDR and the Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro are both designed to do HDR within the camera. I will not be changing my camera but would welcome comments. QuantumFilm developed by InVisage as directed to in another post on here makes one think that there will be more in camera HDR systems arriving in the future. One would hope in camera systems would not suffer for ghost image or purple edges on the clouds which seems to be a problem with Photoshop CS4 may be this will be improved on with CS5? But mainly I take have 2EV stops either way and with some I have used 5 images so total 8±4 = 16EV stops can't see this being done in camera! And if taken with 10EV stops will we need to set the levels even more than now or will that also be auto set in camera!

I think the big thing is for the manufactures to increase the dynamic range of the sensor, once this is done the raw image file will contain more information and be inherently HDR. Hasselblad files are wonderful the dynamic range is out of this world right with the price tag.

The Pentax K7 (and maybe Kx) also have in camera HDR. I've read that Sony's implementation is slightly better since it can do some pixel shifting and double image problems within a certain margin. The Pentax version requires a tripod. That's about all I know for now though. It's not a feature I'd make a buying decision on, but it might nice as a freebie toy.

I've seen the ones from the Pentax K-7 and I must say I'm not very impressed. I'd rather do it myself to be honest. Photomatix does quite a good job of it...

my E-30 has in camera image overlay, but I don't think it's the same thing. it's connected to the multi-exposure setting somehow. I keep wanting to play with it, but I forget.

I have a Pentax K7 and in all honesty if I had bought it solely for the in camera HDR effect I would have returned it. I have used it a few times to just check it out and my opinion is that it indeed sucks. Any HDR computer program (Photomatrix/Dynamic photo etc.) does a far superior job.
IMO it is just a gimmicky item that allows retailers to get some people to buy a camera....much like high MP numbers.
Btw, the faux in camera HDR effect in the Pentax K200D is also lousy as well.
