    Default Pocket Rocket

Got one of those old PDAs laying around in a draw somewhere that you don’t use anymore now that you’ve got that Blackberry or iPhone? If so, break it out and charge her up. Then, head over to http://www.dl-c.com/PPC/ and have a look at three pieces of Windows Mobil compatible software that might be of use to some of you.

There are probably a couple thousand apps for the iPhone by now and some of them might be tailored to the phtog. I wouldn’t know as I’m using the Blackberry Curve. What I can tell you is there isn’t squat for apps in regards to photography offered in the new AppWorld launched by RIM earlier this month.

So, when I found these little gems while researching filters for IR photography, I went in search of a cheap PDA that would run them. Not knowing much about pocket pc’s, I bought a Cassiopeia BE 300 for $10 only to find that without the help of some hackers I wouldn’t be able to run any of these three apps on it. After about four hours of downloading this and that, I finally got all three of the programs loaded and running.

Ephemeris 1.0 is a program that computes the phase of the moon and the times and azimuths of sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset for any location and date. It can also display a table of sun and moon positions for a given day at 15 minute intervals.

DOF 1.0 is a program for photographers that computes depth of field of lens given its focal length, f stop, resolution and focus distance. It reports the near and far focus limits and the hyperfocal distance (the minimum distance you can focus at and still keep infinity in focus).

and the best of the lot…..

Expose 1.0 is an automated exposure guide for photographers that computes recommended exposures given ISO, filter being used, type of subject, and illumination level. It can operate in either aperture or shutter priority mode and it incorporates a knowledge of the proper exposure for many different lighting situations and scenes.

    Nice one thanks

I went for the HTC touch HD which uses windows mobile software anyway so these will run fine on my phone I have been look for a sun/moon set/rise thing for a while now.
Poor photos follow no rules, ok photos follow some rules, great photos break some rules, classic photos break all the rules........there are no rules!

    Cool.
Anyone know a GPS app that can log a route for later geotagging? I have a Palm Treo which runs windows mobile. I tried G2E(GPS 2 Google Earth) but it seems to crash my whole phone regularly, and I haven't been able to find an alternative.

I am not sure about geotagging but I use a app called "memory-map" which I load with terrain maps for navigation. It creates a track as you walk but of coarse you can't leave it on all the time if you do a very long one. Everytime you switch it on it will make a line from the last time you had it on (if that makes sence) so as long as you keep switching it on enough you will have an accurate track.

The track can be synced with the desktop pc software later and analysed.

    Not sure if this helps.
