This is a discussion on Driftin' Down the River within the Black and White - Monochrome/Monotone - photography forum forums, part of the Photography & Fine art photography category; ...
The overall comp is decent here but I feel we are too far from the subjects.
I'd zoom in by like 30% on the crop and lose the second boat if this were mine.

"You have to milk the cow quite a lot, and get plenty of milk to get a little cheese." Henri Cartier-Bresson from The Decisive Moment.
I'll give it a try. I think the crop may visually take away from idea of drifting in a river though.
I agree with Marko, the second boat actually distracts from the image. It would be different if someone was also in that boat. The crop is so tight in already, you cannot tell if they are drifting on a river, lake, pond, or a huge pool, because there is no content showing its a river. So cropping out the second boat will not hurt the content at all.

Maybe this conveys the idea a lot better, though not the best. Wished I had thought of this instead of zeroing most shots just on the couple in the inflatable.
Yes, great content of the river, but like you said, the image doesn't work for the rafters
