It's actually a static display, a cutaway so that people can see the insides. Mike took a second look, and thinks it's actually a little later, a J57. It was used in, among other things, the B-52 Stratofortress and the Boeing 707. It's a turbojet engine with afterburner.
And thanks, everyone. I've got another angle of the turbines as wallpaper on one of my desktops, simply because I think it looks neat.
If Mike can look at that picture and say "I think it's not actually a J54, but more loikely a J57" ... then he's officially a plane nerd!!
