Lest we forget

Today in Australia and New Zealand we celebrate ANZAC(Aus NZ Army Corps) day. This is a solemn day where we remember service men and women from all wars. Most of our battles have been on foreign shores and services are held in places such as Gallipoli Turkey, Bullecourt France and many more.

It was by pure chance that I ended up at this war memorial on Wednesday, but it was quite appropriate.


This shot would look great with a wider lens or as a panorama.




There are elements in these shots which could be better, and since this is actually quite close to my work, I will revisit and try to do this memorial justice.

The irony is that this "holiday" is held in such high regard that if it falls on the weekend like this year, we do not get a work day off. Works out well for employers.

It is still an amazing day. The most solemn ceremonies commence at 4:28am. It is the only day "Two-Up"(which is a game where 2 coins are tossed and bets are made on how they land) is legal.

Our equivalent would be Veterans Day, and the parades are wonderful. When I stand in the presence of those that fought in WWII, and there are only a few left, I tear up.

My Pops was in Europe and we’ve tried to get him to write some of his memories down, but I don’t think it’s something he wants to remember.

In Canada we have Rememberance day on November 11. The country has 1 minute of silence on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11 month. It commemorates the end of WW1 at that exact moment although it is to remember Canadians that have served and lost their lives for their country in all wars, past and present. I live across from a centotaph and we also commemorate ANZAC day here I've noticed by laying wreaths.
