    Default The Avro Arrow Come Home

    Here are a few pictures that I think Q1 will appreciate.

    This is a full size replica of the interceptor aircraft that was built for the Royal Canadian Air Force in the 1950s. I think only a couple were actually built when the Conservative government scrapped the project. The planes and the plans were destroyed. This plane was something that made Canadians proud as technically it was very world class and state of the art for that time. The cancellation was very controversial and was a sad day for many Canadians. It set back the Canadian aerospace industry decades. Rumour has it that planes were sunk in the middle of Lake Ontario. Divers have tried to find it over the years but to no avail.

    This full size replica was brought to Mississauga for an event called Doors Open. The original planes were built in Malton (now part of Mississauga), thus this was called "The Avro Arrow Comes Home" For a detailed description of this plane see the Wikipedia entry;

    A nice set. I was not aware there was a full size model of the Arrow, Thank you for sharing. I have seen parts of the A/C in a museum , but not a complete one. I agree "Black Friday" was the day we lost a chance to be a world class aero industry.

    Cool set. It looks bigger and boxier than Mike's favorite, the F-104 (don't know if it is or not. About the same time period. And the Arrow looks like it was less likely to kill the pilot!). It's a shame the cancellation killed the company, because it looks like they were doing some interesting work.
