The Not So Secret RC Flying Spot

Kinda getting back towards the beginning of summer. We took Dad model flying during his visit.


A partial view of the location. It's an old irrigation pond, though no one has seen water in it, except during a downpour, for the last 40 years.

And though it's hard to do, there are things you really should avoid crashing your plane in. Mike tells of the time he watched a guy crash a 13' wingspan Corsair into these. There was no question of leaving the plane behind, because at that scale, you've got several thousand sunk into it. The bees were upset. Retrieval was not fun.

First up was a model of an H-1 Racer. Designed by Howard Hughes. Mike built the model over last winter, and has been pleased with the way it flies.

De Havilland Mosquito. The battery was pretty worn, so the flight was short. Someone recently passed along some small batteries that will work with this plane.




This one's a bit of a surprise. For a while, Walmart was selling a cheap little RC Beechcraft Staggerwing. It flies really well. The battery and cheap transmitter it came with lasted a surprisingly long time, and when they finally gave out, Mike replaced them with spares he had sitting in a box.






Pretty good flying session, all in all. None of the planes came home in a bag. The clouds kept the temperature comfortable. Most of the time the sun wasn't glaring on the dirt or in the eyes of the "pilot".

That looked like fun! The little red plane made for some cool shots. I like the contrasts in size perception between the airplane only and the airplane with human.

It's tough to tell exactly how large things are at times. We didn't drag out the cable for the buddy box, so Mike was the only one flying. Dad went back to Ashland to visit with my brother and sister the next day.

It;s cool how it hard to tell what size it is in some of the pictures without some perspective.

Neat stuff! The planes are cool! I have to say though i'm really liking that sky in the first shot!!

Thanks, guys. That's a spot that tends to get interesting clouds. Might be that the hills around that section of Nampa brings 'em in.
